Mission Statement
The Department of Women was organized by our Founder Bishop Charles Harrison Mason in 1911. It consists of boards, auxiliaries, units and circles which provide teaching, training and ministry opportunities. We foster spiritual, emotional and intellectual growth by continually creating, implementing and updating programs for all categories of women, youth and children.
The Department of Women is a supportive arm of the National Church. We endeavor to maintain a focus aligned with the vision of the National Church and will continue our commitment through visible participation and monetary support.
The Department of Women will continue to honor the established foundation of our predecessors. We remain committed to the values, legacy and biblical principle of holiness as taught in the Church of God in Christ.

Mother Willie Mae Smalls Rivers
Mother Willie Mae Smalls Rivers (1926–2024)
Mother Willie Mae Smalls Rivers was a trailblazing servant-leader whose extraordinary ministry left an indelible mark on the South Carolina Jurisdiction, the Church Of God In Christ, and believers around the world. Born February 20, 1926, in Goose Creek, South Carolina, Mother Rivers embraced Christian service at an early age and, following a life-changing spiritual experience in 1946, helped establish Calvary Church Of God In Christ in Goose Creek.
Appointed Church Mother at just 20 years old, she went on to serve as District Missionary, Assistant Supervisor, and, beginning in 1968, State Supervisor of the Department of Women for the South Carolina Jurisdiction. Her faithful service ultimately led to her appointment in 1997 as International General Supervisor of the COGIC Department of Women, a position she held for 20 years until her retirement in 2017. During her historic tenure, she developed numerous programs to equip and empower women and carried the Gospel across five continents.
Mother Rivers was equally devoted to her family and community. Her lifetime of service earned numerous honors, including an honorary Doctorate of Humanities and South Carolina's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, awarded in 2022.
Mother Rivers entered eternal rest on July 26, 2024, at the age of 98. Her legacy of faith, holiness, humility, leadership, and service remains deeply woven into the history of the South Carolina Jurisdiction. Above every title and accomplishment, she considered her greatest calling simply to be a servant of God, living with the desire to one day hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
